Sardinia in early autumn 2023

Our autumn trip took us to Sardinia. We were there from September 15th. - 09/30/23 traveling in the northeast / down to Orosei in the east, then crossing the island to Oristano and up the west coast via Bosa / Alghero and Porto Torres. It was a very nice and relaxing trip. We had 3 campsites where we stayed at least 2 nights each. We will definitely come back to explore the south of the island.

Travelogue

Day 1
Untervaz. 14.09.23
Landquart, Graubünden, Schweiz

TCS Camping Lugano-Muzzano
Via alla Foce 14, 6933, Muzzano, Switzerland

We left home around 4:30 p.m. and arrived at the campsite around 7:00 p.m. in pouring rain. The place is ok and the sanitary building is clean. The restaurant is highly recommended.

The place is very suitable for transit, as you can quickly get back on the A2 motorway towards Italy or Gotthard.

Day 2
Livorno 15.09.23
1, Livorno, Livorno, Toskana, Italien

Ferry port

We started from Lugano on September 15th, 2023 in relatively bad weather and arrived in LIvorno at the harbor at around 4:00 p.m. Luckily we allowed enough time because the construction sites on the route, especially around Milan, were already heavy. The journey to the port and ferry station of Corsica Ferries was problem-free and we got on the ferry at around 7:30 p.m. and then moved into the cabin. The ferry was a bit older, but the cabin was clean. the food was good and the ferry left promptly at 9:00 p.m. We slept very well and arrived in Golfo Arancia at 7:30 a.m. the next day and drove towards our first campsite, the Camping Village Capo D'Orso near Palau.

Livorno, Toskana, Italien

Day 3
Fìgari/Golfo Aranci 16.09.23
Nord-Est Sardegna, Sardinien, Italien

Ferry port

Nuova Stazione Marittima, 07020 Golfo Aranci

On the way to the campsite we went shopping for groceries.

Dettori market

Località Punta Marana, 1, 07020 Golfo Aranci SS, Italy

Camping Capo d’Orso
Località Le Saline, 07020, Palau (OT), Italy

After shopping in a Despar supermarket, we walked along a partly narrow street towards the campsite, where we arrived around 9:00 a.m. We received a very friendly welcome and were able to move into our place after the usual registration formalities. We had previously reserved a Premium Plus place and were able to set up directly with a view of the sea. Our plot was very large. The number is 643. The path to the sanitary building is a little longer but the view is even more beautiful. We didn't do anything besides setting it up.

Day 4
Camping Capo d’Orso 17.09.23
Località Le Saline, 07020, Palau (OT), Italy

On the second day, a bike tour of around 2 hours was planned. Due to the hot temperatures, we shortened this at short notice and set off for Capo d'Orso, the bear rock. This can also be clearly seen from the square, and if you want to take a photo of it, you don't need to go directly to the rock because it is not really visible from there. But it was still a nice trip because there were even more rock formations to see, which with a little imagination became apparent, such as a hippopotamus with an open mouth, a turtle or a witch with a yawning face. After the approximately 1 hour tour, we headed back to the campsite and spent the rest of the day lazing around and going into the water.

Day 5
Camping Capo d’Orso 18.09.23
Località Le Saline, 07020, Palau (OT), Italy

For the last day at Camping Capo d'Orso we had booked a boat tour from home via Getyourguide, which took us in the archipelago around the islands of San Maddalena. We took a taxi from the campsite to Palau (cost 25 euros each way). The tour was good and pleasant because it wasn't too hot. We were able to swim and snorkel at 3 stops and at the end we were able to stroll through the town of San Maddalena for 45 minutes. The tour ran from 10:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. The only thing we complained about was that no one knew exactly how to make a reservation for lunch. When you check in at the boat you can specify whether you want to have lunch or not. Those who missed this could buy sandwiches and something to drink. There was no opportunity to do this at the stops and beaches. But the rest was ok. We paid 95 euros all in for 2 people. But we wouldn't do it a second time. Importantly, there are several providers, including those where lunch is included. There was pasta with or without vongole and mussels.

Day 6
Via Torino Arzachena 19.09.23
Via Torino 33, Arzachena, Nord-Est Sardegna, Sardinien, Italien

Today we started our tour towards Orosei at around 9:30 a.m. So that we didn't have to take the same route as when we arrived, we drove towards Arzachena via Palu on the panoramic road SS125. We skipped Arzachena because there wasn't really anything interesting to see on the way through. We drove towards San Antonio di Gallura.

Sant'Antoni di Gaddura/Sant'Antonio di Gallura
Nord-Est Sardegna, Sardinien, Italien

Here too we just drove through and continued towards Posado on the SS131.

Posada Via Circonvallazione Nord
Nuoro, Sardinien, Italien

Arrived at the free public parking lot in Posada - 27 Via Santa Caterina

Next to a small restaurant. Great starting point to visit the castello. The village itself is also very beautiful and definitely worth a stop. We then drove along the coast to Orosei.

Orosei
Nuoro, Sardinien, Italien

When we arrived in Orosei we drove to the public parking lot, which is free. It is located at Via Liguria 10. The town is worth seeing.

We then drove on to our next camping site, Agriturismo S'Ozzastru. On the way there we bought groceries at Euro Spin. This chain has a very good price and performance level.

Agriturismo S'Ozzastru
Strada Statale 125 Orientale Sarda, Durgali/Dorgali, Nuoro, Sardinien, Italien

We received a very friendly welcome at Agriturismo S'Ozzastru and were shown everything. The free places where we could choose one, as well as the entire facility. The place is run by a farming family. We also booked dinner when we booked, and we were able to take it with us as a take away. It was a very extensive dinner (cold) with regional specialties such as cheese, coppa, raw ham and of course the various Sardinian breads. It tasted very good and at 70 euros for 2 people it wasn't too expensive as we were able to eat it the next day. We had a very quiet first night.

The supply and disposal costs 12 euros, which is ok due to the infrastructure.

Day 7
Agriturismo S'Ozzastru 20.09.23
Strada Statale 125 Orientale Sarda, Durgali/Dorgali, Nuoro, Sardinien, Italien

The next day the weather wasn't great, so we stayed at the campsite and spent part of the day at the extremely beautiful pool area. We also stocked up on the farm's specialties, such as peppermint cream liqueur, olive oil, honey, cheese and house sausages.

The space is currently being enlarged, but it remains to be hoped whether it will still have the same charm as it does now. The family deserved it.

Day 8
Cimitero di Orgosolo 21.09.23
Via Sas Codinas, Orgòsolo/Orgosolo, Nuoro, Sardinien, Italien

The next morning we headed towards the west coast, with the first stop in Orgosola. We parked under the church right next to the cemetery. Large and free parking lot. Very close to the center with the beautifully painted facades. A very romantic village. We drove through the highlands on the roads SS 128 and SP4, a bit narrow in places but no problem for experienced drivers. For motorhomes over 8 mt. Length and 2.40 m wide, I would not recommend this road.

Sarule
SP22, Sarule, Nuoro, Sardinien, Italien

Next waypoint a Maria monument just before Sarule. We chose this waypoint so that the navigation system didn't lead us onto the highway. What's a shame about this road is that there are very few opportunities to stop on the side of the road and take photos.

6692+GQ Sarule, Nuoro, Italy

Mary monument

Sòrgono/Sorgono
Strada Statale 388 del Tirso e del Mandrolisai, Sòrgono/Sorgono, Nuoro, Sardinien, Italien

Next waypoint the village of Sorgono, a small village where we refueled. There is also a cork factory here where the trucks are loaded with the bark of the cork tree.

Fordongianus
Ss388 92, Fordongianus, Oristano, Italien

Continue to Fordongianus, where there is an old Roman thermal bath, where hot water still bubbles from the spring today. Parking right next to this thermal bath

Village Camping Spinnaker
Strada Torregrande-Pontile, 09170, Torre Grande-ORISTANO, Italien

Continue to the Spinnaker campsite in Oristano. A not very large place in a pine forest. Very friendly welcome and it has everything you need.

With a pool and a short path through the forest to the private beach from the campsite, where the deckchairs and parasols are still free.

Day 9
Village Camping Spinnaker 22.09.23
Strada Torregrande-Pontile, 09170, Torre Grande-ORISTANO, Italy

After breakfast we went on a bike tour to San Salvatore, an abandoned ghost town that was previously used as a backdrop for some western films. We then drove on to the Roman excavations in Tharros near San Giovanni the Sinis. We had a drink there and drove back the same way. Distance approx. 25 km and easy to manage with a normal e-bike. The route was on normal roads for a large part, but Italians are very considerate drivers when it comes to cyclists.

We spent the rest of the day on the beach at the campsite.

Day 10
Parkplatz 23.09.23
Marina is Aruttas, 09072, Cabras, Italien

The next morning it was time to pack up again and say goodbye to Camping Spinnaker. Today's tour took us north to Alghero, with two very beautiful and interesting stops. One was only reached about 1/2 hour after departure. It's about the Is Aruttas parking lot. Here is certainly one of the most beautiful beaches in Sardinia. Not because of its location but because of the rice grain-like stones that make this beach famous. The parking lot is chargeable, we paid 6 euros for 2 hours. It was definitely worth it.

XC34+3Q Cabras, Oristano, Italy

Bosa via dei Falegnami 20
Aristanis/Oristano, Sardinien, Italien

We now made our way to Bosa. We drove along the coast and not inland. The roads are easy to drive on, even with larger mobile vehicles. In Bosa we parked in a parking lot that is actually only for tourist buses and received a fine of 29 euros. The parking lot at Eurospin is better, it's a little further to walk, but it doesn't cost anything.

Bosa is a very beautiful small town with a certain romantic charm. We stayed there for about 3 hours and also had lunch at the harbor, which was very tasty. We then continued along the coast on the SP49 to Alghero. Although this road has a very nice view, it is also in need of renovation due to the many potholes.

Parking space behind Eurospin (shop) to visit the city.

Camping Village Laguna Blu
S.S. 127, 07041, Alghero, Italy

We arrived at the campsite around 4:00 p.m. and, as everywhere else, we were given a very friendly welcome and given a map showing the possible sites. We pre-reserved a super spot in the front row of the lagoon and set off. We chose pitch 106 Blue and went back to reception, where we completed all the formalities and immediately asked if we could stay for three more nights. That wasn't a problem at all. After we had placed the motorhome, we sat outside and enjoyed the peace and quiet. That evening we ate in the restaurant on the square, which was very tasty. Really recommended. Even though we were no longer there in high season, the place was still well filled. We went to bed and had a really quiet night.

Day 11
Camping Village Laguna Blu
S.S. 127, 07041, Alghero, Italy

The next morning we set off on a medium tour of around 2 1/2 hours on our bikes. To Porto Conte and on the way back we passed a very beautiful bay where we stopped and treated ourselves to a coffee in the bar before we left we made our way home. We were driving on an unpaved road where my wife's bike broke down. We got to the campsite but the bike rides were over for this vacation. In the afternoon we visited Alghero, with the bus which stops right at the entrance to the campsite and the tickets can be bought at reception for 1 euro / person per trip.

We therefore decided at short notice that we would rent a car for the next day. We were able to do this directly at the campsite and it worked perfectly and very easily.

Day 12
Camping Village Laguna Blu
S.S. 127, 07041, Alghero, Italy

We were able to pick up our rented car (Fiat 500) at reception at 9:00 a.m. We have to say the Italians have improved massively when it comes to punctuality. We completed the formalities without any hassle and started our tour around 9:15 a.m. We first drove towards Sassari, then to the mountain village of Osilo, which doesn't offer much apart from the view. We drank a coffee there and drove on towards Elephant Rock and then to Castellsardo. Elephant Rock is the spitting image of Bear Rock in the northeast of the island, simply an elephant. You need a lot of luck to be able to photograph the rock without tourists. Castellsardo, on the other hand, is definitely worth a visit. With the castle at the top of the hill and the small romantic streets, it's really a must. We had lunch there in a very good restaurant with good value for money.

Our journey then continued towards Porto Torres, which we bypassed in order to reach the northernmost tip of Sardinia and swim at Pelosa beach. Even though it was the end of September there were a lot of people there and the water was really wonderful turquoise blue and also warm. At 6:00 p.m. we arrived back at the campsite, handed in the key at reception and ended the evening with a delicious dinner (homemade).

Day 13
Camping Village Laguna Blu
S.S. 127, 07041, Alghero, Italy

Rest day on the site and on the beach.

Day 14
Camping Village Laguna Blu
S.S. 127, 07041, Alghero, Italy

Today it was time to say goodbye to Laguna Blu and prepare for the journey home with the GNV night ferry from Porto Torres to Genoa.

We can recommend the place we were at during this time, everything was perfect. Alghero is also definitely worth a visit. We packed everything up and left around 11:00 am.

Unfortunately we have to say that we were not at all satisfied with the GNV in terms of cleanliness and food. The Corsica Ferries is much better and we will definitely not use the GNV anymore.

Porto Torres Marittima
Via Ponte Romano, Posthudorra/Porto Torres, Sassari, Sardinien, Italien

Day 15
Untervaz
Landquart, Graubünden, Schweiz

We reached Genoa at 8:45 a.m. after a quiet night.

We drove straight home where we arrived in the afternoon without any problems.

We will definitely come back to Sardinia because we really enjoyed it. We still have to explore the south and we haven't seen everything in the north either.
