When I travel around a country, I always try to include a national park. In this case, it was Ceahlau National Park, where we ended up after a visit through the Bicaz Canyon. I found it truly magical here. The park is high in the mountains, and because of that, there is often a mystical low-hanging group of clouds, and what is more spooky than a misty forest in Transylvania? Here you can go for beautiful walks, and enjoy an off the beaten track destination.

Another super cute place, where the influence of the Saxons is clearly visible in the architecture. Be sure to visit the church on top of the hill. On the village square you can enjoy the beautiful view of the church. This village has existed since at least 1238, but only 160 people live there.

The most beautiful place of my trip I found was Transfăgărășan, the road that was built between 1970 and 1974 by the Romanian army, led by dictator Ceausescu, and that crosses the Carpathians. It has been voted the most beautiful road in the world and I can only agree with that. The road winds through the mountains, and offers truly beautiful views, especially when the low-hanging clouds mysteriously move over the landscape. You can only visit the road in the summer months (otherwise it is closed - too dangerous in winter), and don't forget to make a stop at Lake Balea. Not to be missed if you are on a car holiday in Romania.

It is perhaps the most famous castle in Romania, and is located in the heart of Transylvania: Bran Castle. This castle of Bran is world famous as the castle of Count Dracula, but… is that really true? I visited the castle and wrote an article about my visit.

The beautiful Peleş Castle is one of the most beautiful castles I have ever visited. Not only on the outside (that of course has to be your taste), but especially on the inside. I love castles that have been decorated and preserved with an eye for detail. And Peleş certainly meets that requirement, with themed rooms in, for example, Turkish salon style, or Venetian frills.

I personally found Brasov to be one of the nicest cities in Romania. It has a relaxed atmosphere and its convenient location means you can easily reach all the highlights of Transylvania. The city is over 800 years old and is bursting with history. A nice tip is to take a walking tour in the city, but for more travel tips, definitely read this article below.

Nessebar is located on a peninsula and is called the highlight of the Black Sea. The beautiful fortified town is on the UNESCO World Heritage List and is known for its historic center. It is even one of the oldest cities in Europe with a long but fascinating history.

Veliko Tarnovo is also called 'the city of the tsars'. The history of this city goes back about 5000 years. The city was proclaimed capital of Bulgaria during the Second Bulgarian Tsarist Empire and after the victory of the Ottoman Empire. Later the city had to give up the title to Sofia.
Today you can still see that it was an important city. There are numerous sights and historical buildings that still radiate its wealth.
