A month has passed. In the meantime we traveled twice in the big bus. We were on the Riviera of Flowers and in Slovenia (travel diary from my work on the FB page: Andrea traveling with tour groups). But now we are looking forward to being able to travel in our little bus again shortly before the season starts. The order situation makes it possible. However, it will only be a short tour. I call it: “Off to spring”. It should go to where Germany has a better climate: the Moselle.
The fridge is full. The bikes are stowed at the rear. We are ready. - So let's get going!

We were able to use the waiting time thanks to the free use of the mobile home dealer - Smart. Cute car.” Despite the fact that the Smart is so tiny, we had a hard time finding a parking space in Nuremberg. We were right next to the city wall. It wasn't far into the city center.
The cityscape of the once Free Imperial City is characterized by medieval architecture such as the fortress walls and towers of the old town. On the northern edge of the old town, the Imperial Castle rises above the red tiled roofs. The main market in the city center is home to the partially gilded, multi-tiered Schöne Brunnen and the 14th-century Gothic Frauenkirche.
But since we were kind of on hold, we didn't really have the time to look at everything. Because there was also time to return. And we wanted to drive a little further.
Since it was after lunchtime, we didn't get past the Nuremberg bratwursts. The woman at the sausage stand put so much mustard on it that eating it was no longer enjoyable. My scarf looked like this afterwards, so I left it straight away in Nuremberg.

Reisemobilpark Treviris

Our next parking space is near Trier and has the historical name Treviris.
The Moselle got its name from the Celts, who built the first settlements here. They named the river Mosea.
The most important Celtic tribe were the Treveri.
As the Romans advanced further and further under Caesar, they also occupied the Moselle region and the conquered area became a Roman province.
After initial rebellion and many fights between Romans and Treveri, the Celtic tribe finally submitted to the conquerors.
The most important Roman metropolis on the Moselle was Trier, founded by Emperor Augustus as "Augusta Treverorum" in 16 BC. Trier is considered the oldest city on German soil, which is proven by many stone evidence from Roman times.
In Mosella they latinized the Celtic name for the river, which served them as an important shipping route and whose banks seemed tailor-made for wine-growing areas.

The Moselle cycle path has been expanded into a great route to travel on.
Many towns boast ancient Celtic Roman and princely history and relics from times long past. And the vineyards keep passing by. In the "Ostrich Farms" you can try the good wine from the well-known vineyards or quench your thirst with grape juice.
At Perl the river crosses the German border and from here the Moselle cycle path can be completed over 239 predominantly asphalted and flat kilometers. The bike tours lead along the Moselle on the right and left of the bank, and in some cases both sides can even be cycled at the same time.
The cycle route is a typical river cycle path with no significant gradients. The German part is led along asphalted cycle paths, either on its own route or alongside the road, and is therefore also suitable for families.
Those interested could cycle on the Moselle cycle path from the source in the French Vosges to the mouth in Koblenz in 10 days.

The two bears look playful and cute on the fountain on Graacher Straße. They cavort on a massive trough of basalt lava.
According to legend, Bernkastel got its name from a bear and therefore has Master Petz in the city's coat of arms.
In addition, there has been a fountain near the current location since 1584, the pump of which was decorated with a bear.

Show in list
It is the landmark of Zell (Mosel). The “Schwarze Katz” is one of the most famous vineyards on the Moselle.
It is said that in 1863, wine merchants in Zell could not decide between three barrels after an extensive wine tasting. When a black cat came into the wine cellar, jumped onto one of the barrels and “defended” it with a hiss, this was the one chosen. The sales of this wine were such a success that they later bought all the wines from the corresponding vineyard. The location then received its name Black Cat.
In 1936, a monument was erected in Zell's old town with a fountain in honor of the location and the black cat.
Since August 2012, the Zell landmark has also been located in the newly designed traffic roundabout at the entrance to Zell.

Alken is certainly older than the medieval castle that was built in 1197 by Count Palatine Heinrich, the brother of King Otto VI. He had just returned from a crusade to Europe and named the building "Thuron" after a fortress in Syria that he had tried in vain to storm. The Moselle Castle, in turn, was besieged by the troops of the Electors of Cologne and Trier in 1246-1248. She was bombarded with projectiles from the Bleidenberg opposite and finally had to surrender. The archbishops divided the castle between themselves and built two keeps and a dividing wall.

In 1897 a monumental event took place here
Equestrian statue of the first German Emperor Wilhelm I was erected, which was designed as a monument to the founding of the German Empire in 1871. The monument was in the tradition of many monuments erected in German-speaking countries between 1888 and 1918.
The monument is 37 meters high, with 14 meters being the equestrian statue, and the bronze statue weighs 63.5 tons.
It is based on the plans of the architect Bruno Schmitz. He is also represented by the Kaiser Wilhelm monument at the Porta Westfalica, the Kyffhäuser monument and the Völkerschlachtdenkmal in Leipzig.
The base of the statue, which was badly damaged in World War II, served as a memorial to German unity from 1953 to 1990.
The statue was lifted onto the base on September 2, 1993 by the largest mobile lattice boom crane in Europe.

The Schängel is a name for the boys born in Koblenz.
The term Schängel comes from the time when Koblenz was part of the French Republic for 20 years, from 1794 to 1814. Schängel were originally the children of German mothers of French descent. The most common name at the time was Hans or Johann, which corresponds to the French Jean. However, the people of Koblenz had difficulty pronouncing Jean in French, and in the dialect of the people of Koblenz it became Schang. Over time, this developed into Schängel, Hänschen. At first it was considered a swear word. Today, however, anyone born in Koblenz can proudly call themselves a Schnangel.

The Rhine is a river almost 1,233 km long and one of the busiest waterways in the world. The source area (Hinterrhein and Vorderrhein) of the Rhine is in Switzerland, its mouth reaches the North Sea in the Netherlands, of which it is the richest tributary.
We drive through part of the
"Middle Rhine", the 130 kilometer long section of the Rhine between Bingen and Bonn, one of the most important cultural landscapes in Germany.
The river valley, in which around 450,000 people live, is bordered by the Hunsrück and Eifel in the west and by Taunus, Westerwald and Siebengebirge in the east.
Characteristic of its man-made landscape are the vineyards but also numerous hilltop castles, monuments and the winding, old towns and villages on the narrow bank.
Cultural wealth and natural beauty have made the Middle Rhine Valley a tourist destination and the epitome of Rhine romanticism since the 19th century.
The tourism industry markets the southern part of the Middle Rhine from Bingen and Rüdesheim to Koblenz as the “Valley of the Loreley”. This section of the river was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002 as the Upper Middle Rhine Valley Cultural Landscape.

Am "Loreley - Blick"
Show in list
we stay overnight.
The "Loreley Blick" - extremely expensive (23.50 euros) - but really strong!!! It's a shame it's raining...
The parking space is quite spacious. It is located between Oberwesel and St. Goar (also ideal for exploring the neighboring towns by bike). Due to the location on the road and railway line, there is a lot of traffic. But where on the Rhine you don't have that...
The parking space scores points due to its location opposite the Loreley Rock. The shipping traffic on the Rhine is very impressive. Especially here at the bottleneck.
The reception and a small kiosk are located in the house. The price includes a 10% discount, which can be redeemed at a nearby restaurant if consumed. The price includes electricity, waste disposal, fresh water and sanitary facilities (very clean), which can be found along the length of the site.
At the Loreley itself, the Rhine was 160 meters wide and up to 25 meters deep. These are the narrowest and deepest parts of the Rhine in its navigable section. The Rhine winds through the rock massif in tight curves. Because of these very tight curves and strong currents, navigation on the Rhine is regulated by light signals. Some rocks on the Loreley were blown up in the 1930s, so that the Loreley passage has lost much of its former danger.
Heinrich Heine:
I don't know what does it mean
that I am so sad;
a fairy tale from ancient times,
I can't get that out of my mind.
The air is cool and it's getting dark,
and the Rhine flows calmly;
The peak of the mountain sparkles
in the evening sunlight.
The most beautiful maiden sits
wonderful up there;
her golden attire glances,
She combs her golden hair.
She combs with a golden comb
and sings a song;
that has a miraculous,
powerful melody.
The skipper in the small ship
seizes it with wild woe;
he doesn't look at the rocky reefs,
he just looks up into the sky.
I think, the waves devour
at the end boatman and boat;
and that has to do with her singing
the Lore-Ley done.

Day 1
- Also nix wie los!

Day 3
Moselimpressionen

Heinrich Heine:
Ich weiß nicht, was soll es bedeuten,
dass ich so traurig bin;
ein Märchen aus alten Zeiten,
das kommt mir nicht aus dem Sinn.
Die Luft ist kühl und es dunkelt,
und ruhig fließt der Rhein;
der Gipfel des Berges funkelt
im Abendsonnenschein.
Die schönste Jungfrau sitzet
dort oben wunderbar;
ihr goldnes Geschmeide blitzet,
sie kämmt ihr goldenes Haar.
Sie kämmt es mit goldenem Kamme
und singt ein Lied dabei;
das hat eine wundersame,
gewaltige Melodei.
Den Schiffer im kleinen Schiffe
ergreift es mit wildem Weh;
er schaut nicht die Felsenriffe,
er schaut nur hinauf in die Höh.
Ich glaube, die Wellen verschlingen
am Ende Schiffer und Kahn;
und das hat mit ihrem Singen
die Lore-Ley getan.

er schaut nur hinauf in die Höh.
Ich glaube, die Wellen verschlingen
am Ende Schiffer und Kahn;
und das hat mit ihrem Singen
die Lore-Ley getan.

Day 8
Heimfahrt

Day 1
Einführung
Show in list

Show in list

I don't know what does it mean
that I am so sad;
a fairy tale from ancient times,
I can't get that out of my mind.
The air is cool and it's getting dark,
and the Rhine flows calmly;
The peak of the mountain sparkles
in the evening sunlight.
The most beautiful maiden sits
wonderful up there;
her golden attire glances,
She combs her golden hair.
She combs with a golden comb
and sings a song;
that has a miraculous,
powerful melody.
The skipper in the small ship
seizes it with wild woe;
he doesn't look at the rocky reefs,
he just looks up into the sky.
I think, the waves devour
at the end boatman and boat;
and that has to do with her singing
the Lore-Ley done.

It rained particularly badly last night and today. So we decide to go straight home without stopping again in Rüdesheim. We wanted to anyway. Because we have to work again on the weekend.
The motorhome will be parked safely and cleaned. The refrigerator is emptied. Now it’s “goodbye” for a long time.

Vielen Dank.
