Het kanaal is een gedeelte van het jaar bevaarbaar. Huur een bootje, stap op een van de vele rondvaartboten of beleef het kanaal vanaf het vasteland. Er zijn diverse wandelroutes en fietsroutes langs het kanaal. Ook zijn er twee musea over het Götakanaal. Om meer te weten te komen over de geschiedenis van het kanaal ga je naar de Götakanaal tentoonstelling in Motala en voor informatie over de scheepvaart door het kanaal ga je naar het Sjötorp Kanaalmuseum.

Demonstrations are given in every sweet shop and you can see the long sweet strings being expertly processed. If you are lucky you get to taste such a fresh, warm and sticky candy.

For centuries this has been the cultural and commercial center and traded glassware and handmade lace. These crafts can still be found in local boutiques. Besides the historical highlights, there is a lot of nature around Vadstena. In the area you will find two large lakes with long sandy beaches, rolling cornfields and wild animals.

The Göta Canal runs from Sjötorp on Lake Vänern to Mem, Slätbaken, is 190 kilometers long and has 58 locks. The famous engineer Baltzar von Platen built it between 1810 and 1832.
Activities along the canal
The canal is navigable part of the year. Rent a boat, get on one of the many tour boats or experience the canal from the mainland. There are various walking and cycling routes along the canal. There are also two museums about the Göta Canal. To learn more about the canal's history, visit the Göta Canal exhibition in Motala, and for information about shipping through the canal, visit the Sjötorp Canal Museum.

And that slogan fits the bill perfectly, because you will find it all here: a rich culture, unspoiled nature and many traditions that originate in this region. Småland is the birthplace of IKEA and the famous children's book author Astrid Lindgren, just to name a few. It soon becomes clear when you travel around Småland: you won't find it much more Swedish.

This gigantic statue of Picasso fits perfectly into its surroundings. Nature in Sweden is beautiful anyway and this image only reinforces that. It's on the lake. A small beach offers the opportunity for a swim or a picnic. If you have a little more time, Kristinehamn is also worth a visit. The center is not big, but has a park on the water. There is a large loppis shop (Swedish vintage stuff) in the park.

There are special areas for smaller children and for those who want to enjoy a quiet time. For the daredevils there is plenty to do with a free fall slide and an obstacle course. The water is always 25 degrees, so even in less weather, you can stay here. If you still want to warm up a little further, you can go to the hot springs and the sauna. When the weather is nice, you can swim and play in the Frykenmeer and take on the course on the wipe-out track.

A viaduct, railway viaduct, aqueduct, lock and river that cross each other in a very small area: that is Haverud. If you are here at the beginning of the afternoon you will find exactly the tour boats that pass this junction. You don't have to rush, because both boats take almost an hour to get from one side to the other. They have to wait for each other, so the whole process around the locks takes about 2 hours. Here you see a fine piece of engineering work that our children also appreciated

Hey evelien, zijn 2 nachtjes camp grynsby voldoende?
We konden maar 1 nacht vooraf boeken rest was volzet. Daar dan nog 1 nacht bijgeboekt. Voor ons voldoende. Nergens langer dan 2 dagen geweest. Bootjes waren volboekt alsook wasmachine. Wij hadden eigen kano mee. Zeer mooie camping. Met veel Belgen en Nederlanders.

if you are travelling with kids through Smaland, I'd truly recommend a 1 or 2 day stop in Vimmerby rather than Liseberg in Gothenburg. For kids Astrid Lindgrens World really is a fantastic highlight that is in big contrast to normal entertainmentparks. If your kids love (or loved) the Astrid Lindgren stories, they really will love this park. Also one tip for Stockholm in case of a rainy day: Junibacken is an indoor location with a lot of entertainment around beloved swedish childrens books and authors.

da habt Ihr Euch ein tolles Reiseziel ausgesucht! Meine Kinder sind 6 und 10 Jahre, ich war mehr als 25 mal in Schweden.
Mein Tipp: Entweder Stockholm weglassen, oder deutlich verlängern. Mit Kindern sind in Stockholm Skansen, Vasa-Museet und eine Bootstour in die Schären empfehlenswert, z. B. nach Sandhamn mit tollem Strand.
Ich würde von Stockholm aus wieder in Richtung Süden fahren und den Rest für eine weitere Tour aufheben.

Bedankt voor de tip. We waren al aan het twijfelen over Stockholm. We denken om Stockholm niet te doen.
Camp Grinsby staat vast al de rest kan nog veranderen.
We zullen nog eens opnieuw naar Zweden moeten reizen met onze mobilhome.
